How to turn a pet photo into a crochet chart

A good colorwork pattern balances a recognizable subject with a manageable number of color changes. PetStitch helps you prepare a chart; you still choose the yarn and validate the result.

1. Choose a clear photo

Use your own pet photo with a simple background and good contrast.

2. Set your size and gauge

Crochet a small swatch and enter your actual stitch and row counts per 10 cm.

3. Edit, check and save

Merge colors, remove stray stitches and test a small section before starting a large piece.

For a first project, use 4–8 colors and a clear silhouette. A smaller chart loses facial details; a larger chart means more stitches and more time. The written rows run from the bottom upward and alternate direction. Turning chains and borders depend on your chosen technique and are not included in the chart counts.

Flat single crochet charts only. Always test a swatch.

FAQ

Before your first stitch

Does this make a 3D toy pattern?

No. PetStitch makes flat single crochet colorwork charts. It does not generate shaped toys, clothing or amigurumi instructions.

What does one square mean?

One square represents one single crochet stitch. Work from the bottom row, turning after each row. This uses US single crochet, called double crochet in UK terminology.

How do I keep the proportions right?

Enter both measurements from your own swatch. Stitch height and width vary with yarn, hook and tension. Default gauge values are examples, not a guarantee.

Is the example a real finished blanket?

No. The cat is an illustrated chart example. The preview is a grid, not a photograph of a finished crochet object. Uploaded photo results need manual checking and a physical swatch.

What is included in the paid PDF?

A tiled A4 stitch chart with row and column numbers, a color legend, stitch totals, finished-size estimate and every row written as color runs. Yarn lengths are not estimated.

Can I use a photo commercially?

Use only photos and artwork you own or have permission to use. The tool does not grant rights to third-party characters, logos or images.
